Our Featured Pet...

Holly Berry
Holly Berry was a tiny pup in a kennel at the local kill shelter at Christmas time. We were gone over the holidays when her release date came up - unable to find someone to get her out and worried she would be euthanized - I begged the workers at the shelter to please hold her for me. I got home on the 28th and was there the next morning to get her out. Holly has a perpetual worried look on her face and she was terrified after her time there. She gradually started trusting us and began to play like a normal puppy.
In the middle of Jan she came down with a horrible case of kennel cough that seemed to last forever. When she was finally over that we had her scheduled to be spayed the 1st of March. That is when we noticed her starting to walk funny - her back legs were very wobbily..... she started getting worse and worse. No xrays could define the problem and the vets all had different theories. She finally became paralyzed in the back end and her legs were worthless... so she bagan dragging her back legs creating huge sores on them. We bought her a wheel chair that she refused to use.
Holly was taken to the best specialist in town and the local news show did a special on her plight. The diagnosis is it may still get worse and it was a virus that caused her problems. So we were going to just take care of her and try to get her to use her wheel chair....... One more trip to the physical therapist to get her wheel chair adjusted and a heart to heart discussion about everyones quality of life - the foster mom shed tears while discussing euthanasia with the physical therapist.... we all wanted Holly Berry to have a chance at life. That night Holly began to stand - a little lopsided but standing on her own 2 back legs.... over the next few days she did more and more. A email to the vet telling him about what had happened and he responded to get her enrolled in physical therapy now - which she is and she is doing awesome. Dr. Williams told us - we really had no clue of what kind of miracle had just happened....... We do know - we did not want to give up on Holly and she helped us make the right decision.
If you have room in your heart and home for this miracle pup - please let us know - she truly deserves a chance to become a spoiled princess!!

News

We would like to extend out sincere gratitude to the veterinarians in our area that truly care for the discarded rescues we save!! We have had a lot of special needs dogs lately - from a paralized Shepherd mix, a deaf Dane, a blind Lab pup and a emaciated Saint Bernard who was in desparate need a leg amputation and a 5 month old pup who has a birth defect that allows water to get behind the lens of her eyes. Not to mention all of the severe respiratory, parvo and skin issues our vets deal with on a daily basis!

Our sincerest thanks to those special veterinarians that truly want to help these animals! Without help from these guys we would not be able to provide care for what we have!

We can not thank these individuals enough!

Who We Are

Homeward Bound Dog Rescue is a group of individuals who have dedicated our lives to saving dogs from "Kill Shelters" by fostering and adopting these pets out to what is hopefully their "forever" home. We started out as a San Antonio satellite Great Dane Rescue working with PAWS of Austin. As we got more and more fosters - we started pulling more and more dogs from the San Antonio kill shelter (ACS). Because we were in Austin so much with the Danes - our site address is actually based in Austin but all of the dogs are located in San Antonio. We are dedicated to helping these animals become family members and not just pets. We are NOT a shelter - but rather individuals that have opened our homes to the unwanted.... if you would like to help in any way - please email us!

Adopting a friend

Please check out all of the dogs we have on our adoption page - maybe they would make a great addition to your family! We would always like to find the right home for every dog. Because all of our dogs are in foster homes, we usually know if a dog will be happiest with other dogs or without other dogs in the home, if they will be okay with cats, and if they'll be okay with children.

We work with all of the applicants to find the right energy level of dog for their family and the right temperament. All of this pre-adoption work helps to ensure that this adoption will be the perfect fit.

A completed adoption application is required, including the name and number of your current veterinarian and landlord, if applicable. We will contact your current vet, landlord and personal references, if needed.

The adoption fee’s are posted below. All of the adoption fee's go toward our rescue expenses. Unfortunately, the expenses incurred to vaccinate, test and treat (when necessary) for Heartworms, spayed/neutered, micro chipped, and feed these dogs while in rescue far exceeds the adoption fees. Also, many of the dogs that we get into rescue are in need of additional veterinary care as a result of previous abuse and neglect.

Adoption Fees:

Mix Breed Dogs - $125.00 +
Puppies - $150.00 +
Pure Breed dogs - $150.00+ depending on breed
Great Danes - $250.00 + depending on age
Senior Dogs over 7 years - $100

All adoptions have a mandatory 7 day trial adoption before the final adoption will be finalaized.
